Somnambulism: a state that changes behavioral model

Somnambulism: a state that changes behavioral model

Nowadays, several forms or types of somnabulism are marked out and they can be devided into two major groups: first is spontaneous somnabulism which is caused without external influence and second is somnabulism wich is caused artificially.

Spontaneous somnabulism (“sleepwalking” or somnambulismus, from latin somnus – sleep, and ambulio – walk; sin.: walk, wonder; sin.: automatic walk, lunacy, sleepwalking, and sleeptalking) is a crepuscular confused mental state in a form of walk during sleep with carrieng out of habitual actions that is accompanied by amnesia. This type of somnabulism is charactarised by decrease or absence of skin sensetivity, excitability of some sense ograns and increased receptiveness of a subject to suggestion. Somnabusism is common for children rather than adult people. This condition may occur during epilepsy and hysteric neurosis.

Artificail somnambulism can be caused by the means of hypnosis both in healthy and sick people.

In today’s world there are a lot of different scales which evaluate hypnotic state. Yet, all of them agree on the opinion that the deepest immersion into hypnosis that is accompanied by some phenomena which together is called somnambulism.

This complex phenomenon of human psychosomatics is displayed by: sudden akinesia; catalepsy, amnesia, and polymodal amnesia (absence of visual, auditory, tactile, and kinetic perception). Somnambulism is the highest level of hypnotist-patient interaction and it defines three main characteristics of psychotherapeutic influence: trust to a doctor, level of collaboration, and level of a hypnologist.

When discussing the issues of practical implementation of hypnosis, Dr. Salekkion, Ph.D., answered some questions related to hypnotic somnambulism, an amazing phenomenon of human consciousness state.

Doctor, in your opinion, do hypnotic somnambulists have any relation to such states which is described in literature as lunacy and does this state considered to be a pathology?

So called “lunacy” or as it is named in English and American literature “sleepwalking” can be related to sleep disorders and it is not always a serious pathology. In its turn, the model of hypnotic somnambulism is a clearly physiological state and from the point of view of patient’s psychological state has both positive and posthypnotic effects and curative effect of the cerebral biological activity.

Is there any specific symptomatology for somnambulists and how is it expressed?

Subtle symptomatology of somnambulists is quite specific and is not always visible for non-professionals and it is as follows: blinking is slowed down, vision is blurred, eyes become dump, and estrangement form reality occurs. Pupils of somnambulists are widened and forehead and palms are covered with perspiration; their eyes look into distance but this “distance“ is inside.

Nervous system of hypnotics (to whom somnambulists are retaliated) is endowed with unique flexibility and this allows them to immerse easily as they are able to retense (keeping of acquired information - suggestion), in other words they are able to accept suggestion and make it a part of themselves due to which suggestion becomes absolute master of their psyche.

Somnambulists have contact only with those who hypnotized them. When a hypnotists in presence of somnambulist addresses to a third person somnambulist does not hear him or her. Somnambulist addresses to oneself from a third person as if there are two different personalities – in reality and in somnambulism.

It was believed that people in somnambulistic state some sense organs loose receptiveness. Is it really so?

Somnambulists have an intensified muscular sense. Somnambulists are conscious but amnesia is present. When immersing into somnambulistic state the subject continues to make the work he or she had been busy with or continues his walk not deviating from final destination.

Somnambulist has an ability of not paying attention to everything that is not included into his program. Somnambulist gets up, walks around the room, and can even dress up. All procedures are performed with a poker face and usually with open eyes.

Nevertheless, is somnambulism a sleep?

In somnambulism we deal not with a chaotic unconnected conception of superficial sleep but rather with a limited and logically connected conceptional complex that arose in consciousness. Inside this limited sphere of wakefulness psychic activity is displayed more intensively and with increased energy. This form of somnambulism should be rather called changed wakefulness or as Oscar Fogt calls it – “partial systematic wakefulness”.

Laboratory recordings show that decline happens during a deep slow sleep when dreams are rare. If an episode of decline is short, a deep slow sleep is preserved; if an episode of decline long, EEG signs of awakening or drowsiness appear.

Doctor, is it true that somnambulists possess a gift of prophecy?

State of somnambulism looks like dreaming, fantasies, reverie, and meditation. If during wakefulness we can only guess, during somnambulism causes for some actions and some hidden character’s features can be understood easier.

A subject is a hypno-somnambulistic state even with eyes wide open may have a feeling of estrangement from the surrounding world. In front of inner look of somnambulist different images pass rapidly and disappear rapidly; however, some of them repeat and by that means become the main topic of a vision. Meanwhile, somnambulist always keeps inside him- or herself a hidden observer. The external world disappears; only the internal life remains. Hypno-somnambulism in many was reminds the state of “elucidated consciousness”.

Are all people capable of reaching somnambulistic state?

Every healthy person is capable of artificial somnambulism and some possible obstacles at the moment of hypnotherapy can be eliminated.

Are some exceptional abilities of a human appearing during somnambulism?

Somnambulistic state provides all conditions for development of creativity: complete concentration and inner direction. During this period the signals from the external world don’t reach a somnambulist and don’t distract from creative work.

Schopenhauer admitted that in somnambulistic state changes in cognitive ability take place and they give a chance to a mind to receive a “thing in itself”.

During artificially caused somnambulism both internal and external relaxation and both carelessness and imperturbability appears. When compared with normal state, mental and physical abilities are significantly increased. Plus to that, hunger and pain occur yet the ability to bear physical and emotional load increases; stability threshold is increasing far behind the imaginable boundaries.

Still, doctor, how far is this state is studied and can it be differentiated from pathology?

When studying natural somnambulism, Sharko noticed that psychic and somatic phenomena that are common for natural somnambulism are not common for hypnotic somnambulism. Our recent consultation with Prof. Soldatos, head of psychiatry department at Athens University, showed that hypnotic somnambulism has no side effects and is a quite productive state.

What feelinsg does a person in somnambulistic state experience?

State of somnambulism looks like dreaming, fantasies, reverie, and meditation. If during wakefulness we can only guess, during somnambulism causes for some actions and some hidden character’s features become easier understandable.

A subject is a hypno-somnambulistic state even with eyes wide open may have a feeling of estrangement from the surrounding world. Hypno-somnambulism in many was reminds the state of “elucidated consciousness”.

Can this state be compared with taking psychoactive drugs?

Not at all!!! If opium creates the feeling of separation of body and soul from real life sensation and a person unwittingly appears as if in the other world, during hypno-somnambulism, on the contrary, the feeling of real life enjoyment is stimulated and the it opens a new world to consciousness.

Alcohol and other similar substances arise mainly animality; hypno-somnambulism directly influences spirituality. Spiritual self-consciousness increases in degree: somnambulist sees clearly his or her own mission and desires in real life; it seems that correlation of times is understood deeper.

Is there a possibility to use this unique hypnagogic state in treatment of severe addition?

Somnambulists in hypnosis may have a changed perception of time and space and logical thinking as well. The flow of time quickens or slows down. When positive emotions are suggested, time intervals are underestimated and seem to be shorter. On the contrary, when negative emotions are suggested, time intervals are overestimated and seem to be longer.

Sometimes somnambulist even loses conception of own body scheme: it can enlarge of diminish. The inner world may be as big as eternity or as small as a little colourful spot. A person who was withdrawn from hypno-somnambulism requires some time for understanding of own personality, and to adapt to real life time and space. During the process of posthypnotic suggestion we get a chance to break and rebuilt previous stereotypic concepts and to create new behavioral model (increasing productivity of psychotherapy). Hypno-somnambulism significantly intensifies suggestion.

Which other useful things can a patient get from hypno-somnambulism?

Somnambulist experiences a feeling of lightness and renewal: bored person becomes funny and cheerful, silent becomes boisterous and talkative, shy becomes brave and self assure, and a weak person feels a lot of energy. Moreover, the understanding of own power and abilities grows higher.

Hypno-somnambulistic state is characterized by maximum mobility of spare capacities of human’s psychic during which somnambulist has extended possibilities for direction of own central peripheral nervous systems.

Dr. Sakellion, Ph,D., psychotherapeutist and hypnologist, implements a complex of hypno-somnambulism and psychophysiological monitoring procedures that allows to solve acute and chronic problems in correction of behavior in patients with psychosomatic genesis both by saving time and keeping the quality high.
